Important Information: NHS Weight Loss Medications – Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)
The NHS has recently approved a new weight loss medication called Tirzepatide (also known as Mounjaro) for a small group of eligible patients with severe obesity and related health conditions.
While national access to Tirzepatide begins from 23 June 2025, it is important to note that this treatment is not currently available in Coventry and Warwickshire.
Locally, the NHS is developing a new community primary care weight management service that will provide access to Tirzepatide for those who meet the eligibility criteria. This service is expected to launch in autumn 2025, and will include wraparound support such as holistic, diet, lifestyle, and psychological input to ensure safe, long-term results.
Until this new service is available:
- GPs cannot prescribe Tirzepatide or similar weight loss medications for obesity
- Referrals for medication cannot be made at this time, even if you meet the national eligibility criteria
- We cannot continue or transfer prescribing from private clinics
Please do not request this medication during appointments. Our practice team are not currently able to offer or refer for NHS weight loss drug treatment.
When access becomes available locally, eligible patients will be supported through a structured, specialist-led pathway.
In the meantime, if you would like support with managing your weight, our team can provide information about the different options available or you can access further information about the services on the ICB’s webpage Weight Management Services and Pathways – Happy Healthy Lives. All services continue to offer evidence-based support for people living with obesity.
